Profile

I am primarily a painter who is also interested in working within a variety of disciplines particularly mixed media,  assemblage and photography.  My recurring themes are about my relationship and feelings towards the landscape.  Because I am a process led artist I work intuitively with a broad range of materials allowing the media I use to dictate the direction of the work.

I have an ongoing fascination with the surface appearance of objects and use my camera as a visual diary to record marks, lines, textures, and traces that are left behind as evidence of the natural world and our human presence.  I believe these marks and traces bypass much of our intellectual thinking and appeal to our intuitive spiritual self.

My paintings emerge through a process of wiping, smearing, scratching and scraping.  I take off almost as much as I put on and this striping and paring back reveals previous layers, allowing me to build up a history of marks and veils of colour.  The overall effect creates a surface that requires closer inspection in order to reveal passages of time and thought: layered and interwoven, arbitrary and yet interconnected.
